Liability insurance for Nonprofits

Board-driven D&O on a nonprofit budget.

Commercial General Liability

All General Liability questions →
  • What insurance do nonprofits need?

It depends on what you do, not on your tax status — 501(c)(3) recognition does nothing to stop a lawsuit. General liability anchors premises, events, and volunteer activity; D&O answers claims against the board; and the federal Volunteer Protection Act shields individual volunteers, not the organization. In practice, venues, funders, and government contracts are who force the purchase.

Directors & Officers (D&O)

All D&O questions →
  • What is D&O insurance for nonprofits?

The same product as corporate D&O — coverage that defends board members and officers sued over how they govern the organization, with the standard Side A/B/C structure — bought because volunteer directors pledge their personal assets to serve. The federal Volunteer Protection Act limits some volunteer liability but not the nonprofit's, has broad exceptions, and stops no lawsuit from being filed.
